The nature of the mind – working with triggers, anxiety, fear & karma

In these testing challenging times  we go through ups and downs, sometimes feeling overwhelmed and overcome with our emotions and feelings. We can feel confused, lost and don’t know where to go next or how to transcend these difficult and uncomfortable situations. Ultimately, we must surrender to the journey which inevitably gives us opportunities to grow. It may not be easy, as we may often default to behaviors we have become accustomed too, like sadness, anger, frustration and even judgement of ourselves and others.

Fear, anxiety, stress and so on are energetic manifestations of what is stored deeply within our internal system and are somehow mechanisms of protection and soothing that the parts of our mind are creating in order for us to survive and move forward.

We may see situations, people and so on as threats because our internal system are trying to protect us. This is part of the natural inner workings of the mind that have become normal. This is how we perceive things, and our perception is something we can change.

Our thought processes, feeling states and/or behaviours form cycles that perpetuate each other and create more pain and suffering for us and those around us and this embeds these thought processes and belief systems further. We can get stuck in these cyclic loops and the feelings, emotions, behaviours and actions that arise become our default setting.

So how can we effectively navigate this and forge a path toward self-mastery?

We have an incredible system of internal protection, soothing and reaction that is managed by parts of our mind and body. Our mind is multiple, and where we may see the ego as a singular dominant energy, perhaps coming to see the mind as being multiple can help us to understand that we have different thought processes and belief systems held by the different parts of our mind that are often polorised.

Perhaps you’ve noticed when a situation occurs, for example, you’ve been invited to a party, you may have a part of you that is excited to go, but a part of you that is nervous about going, leaving us confused about what to do. This is an example of how we have these 2 differing parts within our mind that have different thought processes and belief systems. Learning to recognise these different parts, or entities and creating a dialogue with them is key to learning to overcome challenges with grace and ease.

The following article lays out a 6 step process toward creating a new internal relationship. There are videos to support this process.

Step #1 – Breathe

The breath has the power to dramatically shift our state of being in an instant through various mechanisms that are hardwired into our body and mind. Breathing consciously can bring:

  • A calming of the nervous system through activation of the parasympathetic nervous system – this is our ‘rest and digest’ mode that helps us relax, feel stable and promotes energy flow to the organs of the body like the digestive and reproductive systems.
  • More oxygen to the brain which gives us more clarity and space to think and come back to stability.
  • Help us focus on our stability and brings awareness to our sense of self and capacity to hold space for our self.
  • Energy as the breath itself is energy that can be used to replenish the system, especially when we feel anxious, burnt out or overwhelmed.
  • Space to be more aware of what is coming up which helps us deal with it.

Have a look at these videos that share some more wisdom on pranayama (breathwork) techniques and nervous system stabalising sets.

Step #2 – Notice From the Perspective of Self

Becoming consciously aware of how our inner world is working and what makes us tick is the important 1st step in being able to make corrections, adjustments or refinements to the mind. It starts with acknowledging and accepting how our mind works and how our parts are organised so that we can create a new kind of dialogue with our inner world that is evolutionary and helpful.

Too often we  suppress or push away uncomfortable feelings, emotions, thoughts or images we see and feel internally – this is saying to our inner world, specifically our parts – I don’t want to see/hear or feel this now – and this creates more distance between us and our inner world. If we want to overcome these difficulties, we must be able to sit with them, notice and acknowledge them so that we start to send the message that – this is important to me and I want to know more about this.

This step can often be the most difficult because we can easily forget to do this. Its all in the practice of conscious awareness that we grow this ability to notice. We may have to remind our self constantly to bring this awareness, attention and inner dialogue in, sometimes that in itself can bring up feelings or parts that are frustrated, but its a natural part of embedding this type of new awareness and dialogue.

When you bring awareness to your your internal world, specifically a part, take time to notice the different characteristics of it – how it feels, if there are any words or images associated with it, its appearance, perhaps its energy signature, where it is in the body and so on. This will help you recognise it in the future.

All this work is being done by our Self or Soul energy. This is the true essence of who we are. As a whole, we are also our parts – however, when we create this dialogue with our mind parts, we are doing it from Self energy. The practice is to keep remembering to come back into Self energy to create the dialogue with the parts from there.

Here’s a video about Triggers which speaks to the nature of triggers and sitting with them.

Step #3 – Acknowledge

As I’ve mentioned above, acknowledging goes hand in hand with noticing. We must do this explicitly with our voice, or internal self-talk where we literally send that message to those voices, visions, feelings or emotions we see and feel.

In this video, I talk about how we can reprogram our “anxiety” simply by changing the way we speak to ourselves about it. The labels we use and the very way we do this. Check it out.

We can say ‘I acknowledge this feeling’ or ‘I see you there’ or even ‘I understand how you feel’. Imagine you are speaking to a friend who has come to you to share how they are feeling, how would you respond to them? Speak in this way. Don’t try to jump in straight away with solutions  or fixits, just simply acknowledge and see what comes back. Give it time and space and watch how your internal system relaxes a little.

The following videos help to guide you through Steps #2 and #3.

Step #4 – Take Evolutionary Action

With clarity, space, energy and focus inward into our internal world, and having started a dialogue with our  mind, we can now take the action that’s needed to overcome the challenges that we face.

When we ask those parts of us that are triggered what they need, or how we can help, we can then negotiate with them and make committments to take the action that is required.

For example, if what’s needed is to take time out, then we can make a commitment to do that. If whats needed is to  contact someone for support, then we can do that too. The key is to listen carefully to what is coming up and take action on that.

Step #5 – Be Present to the Initial Trigger

If we are being present with the initial trigger that came up, for example, a part of us feels overburdened with our workload and we are sitting with that – another trigger may come up that demands our attention in that moment. So for example, a voice may some up saying ‘Just get on with it’ or a part of us may feel we are incapable. This is another part that is arising and it needs support too.

Often the secondary trigger that arises is an uncomfortable feeling, like a judgement or panic… And it’s natural for even a third part to arise that just wants to take us away – distract us or shut us off from all of this as its starting to become overwhelming. Seeing and feeling these parts as a separate parts is key.

In fact, these secondary and tertiary triggers can even take our attention away. This often creates a cascade of confusion, anxiety or overwhelm. Often then, we feel like we don’t know what to do and get stuck – paralysed.  This is EXACTLY where we need to do the work, because too often we miss that there is a second or third part of us being triggered.

We can use the same techniques as before, to acknowledge that trigger which is arising and give it space and time to be heard, seen and felt, so that it can be given the attention that it needs. That trigger can be worked with so that it relaxes and can give way for you to go back to the initial trigger and just be with that.

It’s this practice of untangling the different parts of us, or different energies in our system that all need attention and support.

Here are some videos that will guide you to stay present.

Step #6 – Release

In time, these practices will just become a natural part of who you are and how you engage with your internal world. You will remember more and more to fall back into this as your default setting – personal curious enquiry from Self.

Allow yourself to naturally flow with this new technique and find your own way with it. Your internal world will just be so happy you and tuning inward in a new way that you will make progress.

Integrating other holistic tools and practices is really important too to find your own way. Below are some videos that guide you to do this.

In time, your internal world will allow you to go deeper and deeper, the protective parts will relax and step aside and you will be able to get to the parts of you that carry karma (conditioned identity), samskara (the impressions of our past actions) and the burdens of trauma, and when the time is right, you will be able to let go of that. This is the process of release.

We are releasing, or unburdening all the time… Through the breath, meditation, movement, purging – there are lots of different ways. This spontaneously happens and then at some point, we realise something has shifted. Sometimes we don’t need for those stories or memories of what we are releasing to fully play out… Often the releasing happens on its own, without us even realising what it is or where it’s from. We don’t always need to know or analyse it.

This latter stage of releasing can also be facilitated through a therapist – for example an Internal Family Systems practitioner, a trauma-informed Energy Medicine or Reiki practitioner or other trauma-informed therapist. I would highly recommend that you seek this out – to be held – so that you can do deeper work when the time comes.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or feedback. All your parts are welcome here.

Sweet Coco Red Curry

Those of you that know my recipes know that I absolutely LOVE coconut. Being an island girl (from Mauritius Island) I cannot resist a good coconut and rely on the healthy fats for balanced nutrition.

I’ve recently received many requests for recipes of easy, one-pot meals so here’s another beautiful, balanced meal that is literally easy-peasy and super high vibe nutritious with ample protein and healthy fats. And all in one pot.

6 medium/4 large portions

Preparation time:

20 minutes

Cooking time:

20 minutes

1 medium/large sweet potato cut into medium cubes

1 large onion

1 leek optional

2 inches ginger pummeled

2 cloves garlic mashed

2 tsp curry powder (coriander, turmeric, fenugreek, chilli, ginger, mustard, fennel, dill, garlic, cumin, salt – all powder/ground)

1 tsp Ras-El-Hanout powder (cardamon, ginger, mace, black pepper, turmeric, chilli, fennel, nutmeg, all slice, cumin, paprika, clove, lavender, rose petals)

1/2 – 1 courgette cubed

1 1/2 cups cooked kidney beans

1/2 medium cauliflower chopped

1 stock cube

1/2 block of coconut creme

2 tbsp unflavoured coconut oil

3/4 litre of filtered water – use only as much as you need

1 can chopped tomatoes

Big handful of chopped greens

Fresh herbs chopped to garnish

1. Steam the sweet potatoes until tender yet still fairly firm. Unless you want them to mash up a little in the curry which makes the sauce nice, thick and creamy.

2. Fry the leeks, onion and ginger in the oil on a medium heat. When you can smell the flavours lift, add one or both spice mixes.

3. Fry for a couple of minutes tops to toast the spices and stir to coat the mix.

4. Add the chopped tomatoes and coconut creme and simmer gently until the coconut has melted.

5. Add in around 1/2 litre of water and give a good mix.

6. Add the courgette, cauliflower and any other vegetable. Allow this to simmer and cook through, perhaps another 6 minutes or so.

7. Add the stock cube to a little booking water and mash/dissolve well. Pour into the curry and mix well.

8. Add in the cooked kidney beans, chopped greens and sweet potatoes. Mix well with a metal spoon which minimises mashing. Taste and season well with salt and pepper.

9. Add in any more boiled water to create the sauce consistency you want.

10. Put the lid on and leave for 5 minutes to allow the last few ingredients to hear through.

11. Sprinkle over the chopped herbs to garnish then serve!

Serving suggestion: add cooked aubergine, sprinkle over vegan cheese and serve with a green salad (fennel, lettuce, dried cranberries and blueberries, walnuts, cashew nuts, kale)

Decolonising within on a land with an old colonial legacy

It’s 19/12/19 and in at my.home in Péréybere, Mauritius… An auspicious day to be sharing this transmission.

Never before have I been so acutely attuned to the patterns, belief systems and triggers I hold within me that are residues of colonial conditioning. As I sit here on the land in Mauritius, the land my ancesestors came to as part of their path to activating their vision… I am being fed everything I need to see what old energy still resides in me.

I’m holding that space within to really observe it… Something old can crop up that I thought I had cleared but I guess I hadn’t.

Sometimes a part of me feels devastated at what it’s seeing. Sometimes parts of me feel like it’s tough.

The fact that I’m blending a lot with parts of me that want to shut me down is a clear sign that huge karma and ancestral burdens are being unearthed within me that’s shaking up my world. It’s deep, challenging, old energy that can feel discomforting… And it’s all part of this cycle of clearing, purifying, renewing. It’s a crucial part of manifesting my mission and vision. On the path to liberation…

To be able to stay relatively stable, my core maintained and my self in awareness… Evolution is a blessing. I’m so thankful to be here.

We don’t have to have been directly affected my colonisation to have been conditioned by it. Colonisation of the mind and body (and land, economies etc) is still happening by covert and explicit means.

The principles and values of colonisation have found their way weaved into every facet of life, the competition and conflict, struggle and strife phenomenon that is seen as vital and natural to human evolution. Totally normalised.

So from today we can write a new programme and hardwire that into our system. Other programmes can be uploaded that refine and rewire the old programmes too.

Here’s a transmission I did the other day you may find useful, especially if the need to decolonise ressonates.

I’m so thankful to everyone around me whose playing a part in this phase.

Power Bean Dip

I’m always looking for easy and quick ways to get protein and healthy fat into my meals without having to cook up a storm. High protein and healthy fat foods keep our energy levels up for longer and help our metabolism stay in tip top condition. This recipe was born out of the desire to keep this important balance going.

Also, when I’m out the country my husband Roop survives on veggie burgers and koftas and these dips help upgrade his meals into something more substantial! Plus I give to host gatherings around food and this makes the perfect dip for crudités and crispy things.

Substitute butter beans for cannelloni, chickpeas, navy beans or black eyed peas! I prefer using dried beans which I prepare by soaking overnight and cooking myself rather than from a can. But sometimes you gotta go for the convenient which is ok! If you can buy beans in jars rather than cans, even better!

Medium bowl full

Preparation time:

5 minutes

Cooking time:

5 minutes blending time

1 cup cooked butter, cannelini, navy or black eyed beans

1 clove garlic

1 veggie yeast free stock cubes

1/2 avocado

1tsp apple cider vinegar

3 tbsp live yoghurt (any)

4 tbsp olive oil

4 tbsp filtered water

1. Put everything together in the blender except the seasoning. Blend for 20 – 30 seconds. Keep stopping the blender to give the mix a stir and make sure everything is incorporating.

2. Once you’ve got a smooth consistency, taste and add in your seasoning.

3. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil, chopped herbs, chopped nuts, toasted seeds or anything else!

Activated sunshine smoothie

Between it being summer and owning a new Vitamix style blender – I just cannot get enough of blended drinks. From therapeutic cacao to medicinal smoothies to ice cream desert drinks – I’m well and truly enjoying drinking high vibe, purposeful summer drinks.

Here’s another smoothie I’ve been treating myself with that’s in keeping with my love for all things tropical. The beautiful thing about this smoothie is that it’s completely supportive of the digestive and hepatic (liver detoxification) systems, encourages proper functioning of both systems as well as boosts the immune system and stimulates detoxification of the liver.

The products I’ve used are my favourite from BioCare. I’m absolutely loving their new range of powders and this one – the NutriCleanse is top. It combines all my favourite herbs and nutrients for liver detoxification all in one easy formula that’s tastes amazing!

The liquid B Complex product also helps with detoxing as well as energy metabolism and hormone balancing. This product combines with healthy fats and proteins makes this smoothie a prefect drink for maintaining stable energy levels… You won’t feel like crashing after this drink.

I just love this all-rounder and am proud that it’s therapeutic, medicinal and holistic all at the same time, so can enjoy summer without missing out on these treats.

Letting go attunes us to infinite possibility

Let’s shine a spotlight on what’s important… Radical Forgiveness… We can spend out entire lives “trying” to forgive others and thats the thing… When we’re “trying”, we’re not really doing it, we’re just dragging things out. When we do forgive we must start with ourselves first because really, our problem isn’t with them… What we thought was the problem, was just a projection of our own unresolved stuff.

But what if they caused me serious harm I hear you asking, how is that something I have to resolve? Ultimately our judgement of them and victimisation of ourself is holding us back from being free, from truly healing, so all we can do is go within and forgive ourself for having held on for so long, for having judged or shamed ourself for what happened and so on. All we can do is forgive them for what they did, or at least come to an indifference to it. Otherwise we are suffering. And it will not heal.

unhappy man

Things happen to us and we create karma, reactions from our conditioned behaviours and thought patters thats essentially based on past karma. We base our whole identify around this. And we perpetuate it with each new event that “happens to us”. And that embed the identity further. And then we project it out.

When we truly forgive others and let go of the baggage that came with what “happened”, we’re breaking that cycle of karma, we’re correcting our mind and giving ourselves a chance to rectify our trajectory. We are changing how the future (and the past) plays out, because we no longer carry some of those burdens and so things are different.

We’ve de-energised old patterns and behaviours, those neural pathways are starting to dissolve. We released toxic waste that’s been clinging on for dear life. That toxic waste is so violent. It’s unnecessary and vile. It’s clogging us up and dragging us down.  Eliminate it and allow new energy in.

A part of us doesn’t want to hold these patterns, this toxic feeling towards others. Because a part of us knows its not helping. But that part of us isn;t a dominant energy of the mind… Yet. But it can become so.

eye anger

When we raise our consciousness and vibration, the whole benefits – because we affect the quantum field. We create new structures, new blueprints, new pathways. The quieter aspects or parts of our mind that were previously unable to influence the toxic system can now have effect because we empower it with every bit of dense energy we release.

Those parts of our mind can then go on to have a central role in our system for pragmatism and kindness, gatekeeping the closet of unnecessary suppressed emotion.

We take a bigger steps towards our true nature, remember a little more that we are leaders. Leaders of our families and communities. Leaders that speak the truth, be in authenticity and activate our natural healing abilities for our Self and those around us.

We are spiritual warriors, with a refined assertiveness and boldness that’s pure and light. We no longer need to hold onto what no longer serves us, we can forgive, we can let go. We can learn to be free.

Our true nature is already free. We already are powerful and free, we just haven’t realised it yet. We’ve allowed the gunk to build up and obscure our view. To affect our memory. When will we see that the universe out there is the same as the universe in here… Infinite and powerful… Free and vast. Unbounded and bright. That is only us.

Let us take to the shed this summer, examine our tools and put together our new toolkit for our Rise. Lets use our toolkit to shed layers and layers until we can see clearly.

Awaken & enliven the new you

We are powerful beings designed to enjoy the full possibilities and potential of life, but too many of us are stagnating, losing hope and procrastinating. We keep putting off our growth for a time when we have time… Or a space in the future when we are more ‘free’.

The thing is, we’re never going to have time and be ‘free’ with that attitude… There will always be something in the way. Because it isn’t the time or space that really is the issue, it is us! We are getting in our own way!

We have these old patterns and conditioning running through like a bad computer programme that doesn’t allow us to GIVE to ourself, practice deep, restorative self-care or make the committment to radical self-growth. Because it’s scary and our mind would rather distract us than allow us to go into silence and face our Self.

It’s easier to keep going and convince ourself that life is fine and we’re living the dream, at our peak, getting stronger… But are we really living an inspired and full life?

When we do take courage, and allow ourself to go inward, it’s never as difficult as we think… We start to see that the challenge is all a part of our evolution and we start to welcome it… We feel relief that we no longer have to carry our stuff around… We feel strong because we’re feeling deep into our body, mind and soul without feeling hopeless or out of control.

But if you’re reading this abd don’t think any of this is possible… YouYfeel stuck and hopeless things will every change… Or you’ve tried and it didn’t work… Well, you’re in the right place…

I see you!

YOU  ARE NOT JUST A BODY – you are a SOUL experiencing itself as many things including a body, mind, consciousness, nature, energy… And there are so many more other beautiful experiences to be had as a human being.. Like joy, bliss, love and unity consciousness… There are so many ways we can authentically and unashamedly express our true Selves and be free.

It is our KUNDALINI ENERGY that is the fundamental power that enlivens our vessel, mind and soul. When we clear the stagnant old energies from our fields and AWAKEN this and other fundamental energy systems we can get access to greater levels and depths of our Self and of the world around us. We can raise our consciousness and deserving power, connect to who we really are, step into our true essence and power and manifest our reality by attracting what we desire and need.

STEPPING INTO OUR POTENTIAL takes dedication, commitment, time and self-care… You really have to want to create the life you dream of to commit to these potent practices. Because the life you dream of can BECOME your reality… Yes, you really can live your most incredible potential and possibility in life now…

I’m so grateful to have been able to create the life I want and deserve, but it hasn’t been easy… It’s taken dedication, discipline and willpower to get into the flow of life and also to let go of what was holding me back…

Now, I’m going to teach you how to do the same… But you’ll do it faster than I did and have more fun along the way! Plus I’m sharing a fully holistic method of Awakening the primal Kundalini energy and how to sustain it with full-spectrum living.

So you’ll be able to live the true incredible life you came here to live… You can show up to yourself, your family and community in a powerful way. You can break through all your limitations and be totally enlivened and free!

You see, awakening your kundalini isn’t just a one time experience, it takes persistent practice to raise and keep raising it as well as enabling it to do it’s deeper work to activate, cleanse and empower us.

4 reasons morning yoga sadhanas (practices) are essential for personal growth

Why are yogic practices best initiated in the morning? There are several reasons but I’m going to focus on the top 4 most powerful for me. I hope this inspires you to develop a regular daily practice as there’s nothing more important than you!

#1 To start the day getting ourselves into the best possible energetic flow.

This initiates our energy systems, particularly the kundalini energy to rise and empower our every move. Our metabolism can properly kick in and adjust or balance itself out over the day.

If our metabolism is sluggish, morning yogic practices including meditation and light journeys or flows are an integral part of reinvigorating this system. Morning practices before food are also amazing for weight loss or protein/fat adaptation as the body learns to use it’s store of fat for burning.

Also after a night sleep and deep detoxification, the detox organs need to be flushed out such as the lymphatic system, liver and kidneys. This is vital in ensuring clear channels to for energies, nutrients and Easter to flow where it needs to go, keeping us tip top!

#2 To focus the mind the way we intend on continuing the day, sharp, clear, empowered and aligned with the heart.

Much of our role here on earth is to journey our own individual path, realising our true essence, our true power, and sharing the lessons we learn along the way. Yoga is unity, try union of the mind with the self and the energy systems… Union with our ultimate divinity.

Working with the mind is integral in this journey of self-realisation and it’s a lifetime of working with the mind that helps us transcend through the different levels of consciousness and ultimately higher densities of being.

When we prioritise the mind in the morning, we start the day as we intend to lead it in full control and power. By aligning our intelligent heart energy with the mind, the heart can lead with the aid of the mind, rather than the other way around.

#3 To honour ourselves through devotion, the yoga of bhakti.

Keeping devotion as a practice toward ourselves can be such a challenge, especially in a world that prioritises material gain for others. We must keep coming back over and over again to devotional practices so that we reprogramme the conditioning deep within us that drives us to give to others before ourselves.

Many of us want to support the evolution of the planet and people in some way, and if so, it must start with ourselves. If we can’t sustain the deepest of devotion to ourselves, we’ll never be able to affectively do the same for others and will eventually burn out. I see it all the time and have experienced it personally. How we treat ourselves is a reflection of how we truly see humanity and what were prepared to do to help it grow.

#4 To honour our mother earth and the cosmos, the energies that sustain and guide us.

We are in a constant flow of recieving and giving energy with nature, this sharing being a fundamental mechanism of material and spiritual life as a human. Whether we are aware of it or not, it’s happening and the more awareness we grow, the more powerful reconnections, synchronicities and capacity for manifeststion grow.

When we start the day by honouring divine nature, we offer devotion, gratitude and love, amongst other energies that nature receives and responds to by supporting our journey.

A morning yoga practice doesn’t have to be just about meditation and asanas… Integrate other routines and activities too… Like sunbathing, lymphatic massage, movement, affirmations or gratitude practices, nutrition and more!

I’ve got some beautiful integrated yoga practices on my YouTube channel and my free e-book has lots of suggestions for a morning routine that you can incorporate too.

I’ve also written other articles about my morning routine. See one about my top 3 things to incorporate here.

Did you know I offer free 20 minute consultations to anyone that signs up to my mailing list? See for yourself, click the link above!

I hope you feel inspired to start or upgrade your morning practices today, because today really is the day you can step up into your next level of potential!
